The formula is simple.  Learning takes practice, focus and application.

First learn all the planets.  Are they fast moving (relative) and personal, or more generational in nature?  What is there nature?  What area of your ife do they rule?  What fixed points are considered as strong in your makeup as are the planet signs?  For example, the triple three for the basic you is often seen as the Sun, Moon and Rising.  These are, in order, your basic character, what you emotionally need to be happy, and the initial persona you present to the world, (your filter, so to speak).  The sun and moon are considered “planets”, and the rising sign is a two hour window in any 24 hour day at a given place.

Second, learn the four elements, how fire, earth, air and water are in order through a year. What, and which sign, is cardinal, mutable or fixed? And what does that mean?

Third, learn the signs.  Details about them are important.  Which in which signs do you have planets in, and which sign you do not..  Each sign has a “ruling planet”, and a modality, like fixed, cardinal or mutable.  And each sign has a house and a “natural planetary ” ruler of a house.  Of course, each sign has gifts and challenges.  We can learn to recognize and work with them.

After looking at the details of the signs, the number of signs and elements in a chart, we step back to look at the big picture; the hemispheres and shape of the overall chart.  This helps us know if a person is more introverted or extroverted, or more rationally focused on self or more emotionally focused on others.  Most people have a balance and it is helpful to look at the planets and signs within these quadrants.

Fifth, we look at the major aspects in our natal chart.  These include conjunctions, trines, squares sextiles and oppositions.  Of particular note are and three or more other close planets in one sign. The minor aspects are to be largely ignored until you have the basics down.  some aspect to a few fixed places on the chart are important, like aspects to your ascendant, or mid-heaven.

Finally, you begin to look at the houses.  And just like what they are called, I like of think of planets and their signs in a house as “interior decorators”.  The house is what it is, and signs and planets in it show what that house looks and feels like for an individual.  Houses with no planets in them don’t seem as important to individuals, and tend to act as the sign that rules that house, with no planet in that house.

Sometimes what is not there is important.  A person without any of an element may crave it and be drawn to it in their lives.  A sign you do not have in your chart may strongly attract or repel you.  Every chart is complicated and unique.  Even with “astro-twins”, the environment you grow up in still plays a big role.  Were your emotional needs met?  (your moon)  Did you communicate well in your family? (your Mercury, and their Mercury signs).  How we work with what we have is what makes learning astrology worthwhile.  Helping others is a bonus.

Email me if you would like help getting and learning about your natal chart.  Rates are comparable to what I charge for Tarot readings, yet I need specific information ahead of time.  I work via email, with either phone or face to face sessions.  Detailed “crib sheet” handouts are included.
